The Lakeway Children's Choir and Encore Theatrical Company will offer our second annual Super Summer Singer Camp July 21-25. The camp is designed to introduce children to the joy of singing in a choir as well as provide more experienced choristers with personal training in proper vocal technique and music reading skills. The campers will rehearse songs, play instruments, and each will receive an individual coaching session. The camp will be led by Laura Ritter, Director of Choral Music at Walters State Community College. Super Summer Singer Camp is open to children in grades 2-8 and will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Morristown. The schedule will be 9am-12:15 with a final performance at 12:15pm on July 25. The cost of the camp is $100. Space is limited, so early registration is important.

often. They have lower truancy rates and higher graduation rates, even
when controlled for socio-economic status.
The arts are a vital part of the education process. Encore is

ABOUT ENCORE'S EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT:
First, Encore partnered with the Morristown Hamblen Library to present Library Days. In conjunction with the productions of Peter Pan and Cats, Encore brought to life the literature that the shows were based on.
Our first children's acting class had eager participants from grades 4-8. Led by Educational Director Heidi Stansell, this six week class focused on introductory elements of acting and explored technical theatre as well, from set and costumes. The class concluded with a showcase performance for their family and friends.
Encore also launched our first Tour Show. "Cinderella Confidential" played to over 1000 elementary school children this spring. This is an amazing opportunity for us to bring live theatre directly into the schools. Educators were provided with a study guide that included pre-show and post-show activities for teachers to use in the classroom.
A special project for us was working with Russellville Elementary School to build their set for the First Grade musical "Stone Soup." For inspiration, students used their imaginations to draw what they thought the set should look like.

Educational Director and Company Member Heidi Stansell took the drawings and placed them into a design for the show. The actual set pieces (that included mountains, trees, and houses) were the actual designs of the students, enlarged and realized for the background of their production.
While Cats were dancing into the summer, children from all over the Lakeway
area were busy studying music, acting, and dance. Our first camp, "Super Summer Singers" was the first project after Encore assumed management of the Lakeway Children's
Choir. This camp was designed by ETC Company Members Laura Ritter
and Kathy Combs and introduced children to the joy of singing in a
choir and provided more experienced choristers with personal
training in proper vocal technique and music reading skills. The
campers rehearsed songs, played instruments, and even composed some
music of their own. Meanwhile, "Triple Threat Camp" was offered in cooperation with the Lakeway
School of Ballet and Dance. Instructors Ashley Cunningham, Adam
Malone, Laura Ritter, and Jared Smith spent an entire week with 13
kids. The term "triple threat" means that a person is well versed in
the three disciplines of singing, acting, and dancing. These
students spent their day learning all about the three disciplines
and worked with instructors on combining all three. Both camps ended
with a showcase performance.
"We were very pleased with the outcome of our camps and look forward to making both an annual event,"
said Micah-Shane Brewer. "It's important for our students to have opportunities for training in the performing arts. We're lucky that we have the people to offer that training. These students are at an age where impressions stick. If they are given the tools, guidance and encouragement to hone their craft, they will reap the benefits of starting at an early age."
