Chicago sizzles this summer!

Chicago

Get ready for a hot summer sensation with one of the most successful Broadway musicals of the past decade! Encore Theatrical Company is pleased to present the Tony Award winning musical sensation Chicago. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the roaring 1920s, Chicago has everything that makes a Broadway musical great: a universal tale of fame, fortune, and all that jazz. One show-stopping song after another, and the most astonishing dance for the stage!

With music and lyrics by legendary Broadway writing team John Kander and Fred Ebb, Chicago is best known for its sensational jazzy style of dance, originally choreographed by Broadway legend Bob Fosse. It first opened in 1975 with stars Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon, and Jerry Orbach, but became most popular when it was revived on Broadway in 1996, winning six Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival. An Academy Award winning film version of the musical was released in 2002 starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, and Richard Gere.

Artistic Director Micah-Shane Brewer is excited to have a chance to stage Chicago. “It’s a highly sought after production for theatre companies across the country,” said Brewer. “Due to its popularity and success on Broadway and on the National tour, out of all theatres nationwide, approximately only five percent of those requesting to perform the show are granted permission.”

Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife who maliciously murders her lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer Billy Flynn to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

The cast of Encore’s Chicago is led by Encore newcomer Robyn Isaacs asVelma Kelly, the famous nightclub singer who is behind bars for muder. Joining Isaacs is Encore veteran Allison Dixon as Roxie Hart . Tom Sizemore makes his Encore debut as Billy Flynn and is joined by Martin Robinette as Amos Hart and Ashlee Correll as Mama Morton. B.Laney also makes her Encore debut as Mary Sunshine.

The ensemble of Chicago is made up of a very talented group of sensational dancers and singers from all across the Lakeway area. They are: Kurtis Ball, Josh Ball, Micah-Shane Brewer, Annie Cavin, Rowdy Cloud, Bleu Copas, Ashley Cunningham, Lindsey Decker, Courtney Fix, Lucas Hefner, Sarah Jefferson, Kathy Jones-Terry, Kaysi Knight, Stephanie Liposky, Sharon McGinley, Matthew Mimbs, Natasha Morrison, Drew Ogle, Robbie Poteete, Amy Steisslinger, James Templin, Brad Weems, and Kay Yang.

Encore welcomes Chris Sanford who serves as the choreographer of the production. Sanford is a free-lance singer, dancer, choreographer and instructor whose work includes theatres across the southeast like Dollywood, American Jukebox Theatre, Black Bear Dinner Theatre, and the Louise Mandrell Theatre. He is an adjunct faculty voice and piano instructor with Walters State.

Adele McDonald serves as Musical Director. An accomplished musician, McDonald is an adjunct faculty instructor with Walters State and a company member of Encore. She leads an excellent ensemble of instrumentalists that include Jared Box, Tylar Bullion, Ashlin Harris, Dan Lishin, Robb Neill, Jim Pope, Darin Pratt, Laura Ritter, and Vann Turner.

The production is directed by Encore’s Artistic Director Micah-Shane Brewer. Company member Debra Williams serves as the production Stage Manager along with Lynn Walton and Amy Webb as Assistant Stage Managers.

Encore applauds the sponsors for Chicago which are All Celebrity Travel, Brewer and Terry, Charter Media, and Holston Gases. These sponsors recognize the importance of the arts in our community and enable Encore to continue producing quality theatre.
